Non-Contact and Contact Sports ApprovedAkron Public Schools Board of Education has voted to allow winter sports to commence. This includes non-contact and contact sports.

"Contact sports," said Athletic Director Joe Vassalotti, "that's wrestling and basketball, will also include weekly COVID-19 testing."

Akron Public Schools had relatively few interruptions in fall sports and adhered strictly to public health guidance for team members and coaches.

"We urge all of our athletes and families to follow this guidance carefully," said Superintendent David W. James, Ed.D."

The board voted 5-2 at a special meeting Monday night to approve the start of contact sports and voted 4-3 in favor of starting non-contact sports, such as bowling and swimming.

Board President Patrick Bravo said, "This is an extremely difficult decision that this board made, and as you can see it was not a unanimous decision. And so there’s a responsibility and a trust that we are placing in our student athletes, our coaches, our parents and our families."

Gyms, natatoriums, etc. will be limited to 15% capacity. Each athlete is allowed two tickets for spectators at events, and it will be up to athletes and coaches to follow safety protocols.

More details will be made available on the APS website at Learning 2020-21 Winter Sports.
