Are You Interested in the Field of Public Health?KSU is offering a free, summer camp opportunity that will run for three weeks in August and will be held entirely online to our high school students who are interested in exploring the field of public health.

We all know the world has changed, perhaps forever. The overall lesson of the COVID-19 pandemic is that we need a public health workforce, prepared at all levels, to monitor the world for emerging infectious diseases, to prevent the spread of highly contagious diseases, to develop new treatments and vaccines, and to invent novel approaches never seen before.

The Virtual Public Health Academy has four goals for each participating high school student:
  • To explore the question “What is Public Health?” by participating in exploration activities in disease detection, disease prevention, community health education, the impact of lifestyle on health, health and the environment, and the biological basis of health.
  •  To understand pandemics, how disease develops and spreads, how contagious diseases can be contained, how information is spread across the globe during times of pandemic, community response, treatments and vaccines, and how our behaviors impact our future.
  • To determine what each of us can do in the coming school year to lead friends and family through this difficult time and provide service to our communities.
  • To explore future careers in public health and envision a future at Kent State University in a health promotion career pathway such as public health.
Students in the Virtual Public Health Academy will:
  • Actively work in public health by engaging in online activities, such as working with local health departments, to develop educational campaigns and COVID-19 response posters and materials that promote healthy lifestyles.
  •  Explore careers and meet public health professionals in various roles including environmental health, health policy and management, behavioral sciences and public health research.
  • Work in virtual online teams in competitions to develop plans for computer games and phone apps that can be used to teach others about public health risks and interventions.
